Question answered by Dr. Phillip Corbin of Lifetime Wellness in Bentonville

Q: How much calcium are you suppose to take daily?

A: Calcium RDA is between 1200 and 1300 mg/day. This would be an average that would be equitable for most folks. However, calcium is enriched in most processed foods and is in abundance in green leafy vegetables. Therefore most receive an adequate amount of the mineral in normal  diet. Calcium is utilized by the body to develop hard tissue (bone), but it must be in the presence of magnesium to formulate appropriately and  this mineral is deficient in most people. The magnesium acts as the  framework for the calcium to build upon. The RDA for magnesium is around 400 mg/day but I would suggest being near to 500 mg/day for most people.

I read in a book that there are at least 6 forms of magnesium supplements (lactate, orotate, glycinate, gluconate, oxide and hydroxide). How do you know which type to buy?. The book also says not to take at the same time as calcium which competes with magnesium for the same absorption sites.

Mag oxide is not assimilated by the body very well, and is therefore a
poor source of magnesium. It is, however, very cheap, which is why it
makes its way into so many multivitamins and supplements
To the ensure proper absorption of magneisum, you need to take a
chelated form of magnesium, and the most logical choice is magnesium
citrate. It is relatively inexpensive compared to other chelated forms
and is well absorbed by the body. Even then, there is more than one
      form of magnesium citrate.

Many manufacturers are not even aware of the type of magnesium citrate
they are selling, or even its importance. It is essential that you
obtain the correct type of magnesium so that your body can make use of
it, otherwise you are just wasting your money.

Tri-magnesium citrate is the most soluble form of magnesium citrate,
and is the type listed in the US pharmacopeia. If you want the most
effective form of magnesium citrate, then it makes sense to get a
magnesium supplement that specifically contains tri-magnesium citrate.

Why do you need to give him supplements when he can get them from food securos such as milk and dairy products? Give him a balanced diet and plenty of sun (for the vitamin D) and he’ll be okay with respect to vitamin D and calcium. If you do suspect an underlying medical condition that is causing him to have weak bones, take him to a doctor to get tested. Do not diagnose and treat this on your own. Good luck!

So, there are several dirfefent forms of calcium supplements. Calcium carbonate, calcium citrate, there are pills, chewables and liquids. I think Vitamin World might be the only store that sells calcium in a liquid form which is easier to absorb. The last time I checked, GNC didn’t have that. The problem with calcium carbonate is that you have to take them with food (ie. at meal times) to absorb the calcium. You might be better off with calcium citrate which can be taken any time. The other thing you should be aware of is that you need to take Vitamin D with calcium so that the calcium can be taken up into your bones. There are supplements with Vitamin D and calcium. You can also get calcium, Vitamin D and Vitamin K together in a chewable like Viactiv . The other issue to be aware of is that your body can only absorb 500 mg of Calcium at one time. That’s why 500 mg is the maximum dose pill that is available. If you take any more, you just won’t get anything out of it. So, to get the recommended daily dose of 1,000 mg this means that you have to take two doses at separate times during the day. Another concern is that calcium can inhibit the absorption of other drugs and vitamins. You want to check with your doctor if you are taking other medications or supplements. I take two calcium supplements per day and an iron supplement. Iron and Calcium are absorbed competitively , so I have to take all three at separate times of the day. It’s a pain. Talk to a nutritionist they can help you figure out how much calcium to get in your diet using supplements and foods. Good luck!

does he have poor indigestion and no idsegtion at times? not getting enough roughage in the diet makes the idsegtion poor. also it reduces the calcium and other mineral in the diet. 1 half of a teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water every night and in the morning will help the idsegtion. start making him eat spinach, broccoli, kale, brussel sprouts. collard greens, mustard greens poke if you know where to pick it. it grows wild all over the east coast. liver also has b vitamins and iron and other minerals since the liver is where dark leafy vegetables go to in the body according to eastern medicine.
